This is pure madness
Tale
In Mexico, a lawyer receives an unexpected offer to help a feared cartel leader retire from his business and disappear forever by becoming the woman he always dreamed of being. IMDb Editor-in-Chief Arno Kazarian offers a quick rundown of 12 films he screened at the 2024 New York Film Festival, including Anora and the dangerous and oddly erotic Misericordia. Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language debut. A French title card misspells the Indian city as “Delhi.” Featured in Latino Slant: The Remake of La Bamba, Tarantino Has a BIG Mouth, Jenna & Selena Shocks’s PEPPER! (2024). El TrioWritten by Camille, Clément Ducol, and Jacques AudiardStarring Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez, and Zoe Saldana. My second favorite film from Cannes after “The Substance” (I haven’t seen “Anora”).
“Emilia Perez” is really inventive
A musical about drug traffickers and corruption in Mexico??? WTF??? It mixes a lot of different genres: drama, comedy, musical, thriller, but does it in a very good and entertaining way. It’s also extremely original and also surprisingly moving. There is a character here who has an emotional and heartbreaking journey throughout the film. I won’t go into details. It’s not really a spoiler because it’s revealed in the first 15-20 minutes of the film but I didn’t know it and I was shocked that this film went in this direction.
Gascon plays the main character
That’s why I advise you not to read the description and go see it completely blind if you want to have the best experience possible. The best thing about “Emilia Perez” are definitely the performances. The movie won the Best Actress award at Cannes for no less than 4 performances (Karla Sofia Gascon, Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz). Saldana plays the main character and has a lot of intense and spectacular scenes (especially the musical scenes). I am happy that after all these blockbusters, she finally got the role that allowed her to show her acting skills. It is a bit of a supporting role but to be honest, she is the heart of the movie and the whole plot revolves around her. Gomez and Paz were good but I am surprised that they also won the Palme – their performances were not as great and memorable as Saldana and Gascon.
This movie is elegant and beautiful
Jacques Audiard’s vision is bold and impressive. I love the cinematography and the music. Not everything works perfectly and there were a few moments where I wasn’t completely sold on this movie, but for the most part I enjoyed it and was impressed by its craziness, ingenuity and originality. I’m not a big fan of musicals, but the musical scenes (which aren’t many) in this movie are captivating and very well choreographed and shot, making them enjoyable to watch. The songs are catchy and memorable (my favorites are the ones about vaginoplasty and the taste of Cola). “Emilia Perez” is not for everyone. Some people walked out, some said it was one of the worst movies of the festival, some loved it (including me).
The general public won’t like it
The closest I’ve seen is “Annette” by Leos Carax. “Emilia Perez” is more popular, but it will always be missed by many people. But I encourage you to see it anyway. Let’s support weird and niche cinema. Check out the full lineup for the 62nd New York Film Festival this fall.
