Based on Robert Harris' 2016 novel "Conclave"
Tale
When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with choosing a new pope in one of the world’s most secretive and oldest events, he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the foundations of the Catholic Church.. Sister Agnes: Although we sisters are invisible, God has given us eyes and ears.. The death of a pope and the election of a new one is an event for the Catholic world.
Follows with great interest
As a period of mourning is observed for the late Pope, suspense builds and audiences around the world learn the names and nationalities of the main contenders. The film shows the protocols that follow the death of a pope and takes the viewer inside the walls of the Vatican as the various contenders are seen. Ralph Fiennes is excellent as Cardinal Lawrence, Dean of the College of Cardinals, the ecclesiastical leader who organizes and manages the conference.
Other contestants rise and fall
Stanley Tucci as Cardinal Bellini is the liberal favorite, while Sergio Castellito is the conservative alternative, Cardinal Tedesco. The stakes are so high that there is tension and strife that highlights rivalries. Because this process takes place in the utmost secrecy, the outside world never knows what the negotiations will look like or the conflicts that may arise.
The film gives a dramatization of what can happen during the conference
Some conferences are over in a short time; Others take longer to play. In this film, voting reaches a deadlock, followed by a surprise and another. We see how the Vatican and the world are not mutually exclusive but intertwined.
A great movie and great performance by Ralph Fiennes
As an observer of these conclaves, I was drawn to the character of Cardinal Lawrence and how he had to navigate the challenges and limitations of his role. Check out our list of exciting new movies from this year’s film festivals, including Venice, TIFF, New York Film Festival, and more.
