So what’s not to like!?
Having watched all 3 seasons of Outer Banks, I can’t deny that I was amused and entertained: every episode is filled with fast-paced adventures, treasure hunting and chasing villains, all in exotic locations and with romantic entanglements on top. between the young and attractive cast. Well, I have some reservations too.
And of course, the silly nicknames like JJ and Pope and John B (what does B stand for, anyway?)
The events are all extremely far-fetched and unrealistic: like how this group of teenage friends manages to escape from the police or heavily armed criminals time and time again, often under a hail of bullets but always unharmed; or how they solve baffling mysteries (like hidden treasures from the ages or the location of the legendary El Dorado) with the flick of a wrist or a crazy stroke of luck. The young actors are obviously supposed to illustrate the importance of true friendship, but their youthful demeanor gradually gets on your nerves, all bros and dudes and the inevitable backwards caps. They all look good, but the acting is just adequate, with only Drew Starkey really standing out as the troubled Rafe and Rudy Pankow being quite convincing as the resourceful, ADHD-ridden JJ.
In fact, it’s more of a teen-oriented series
, barely going beyond the realms of The Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew. Maybe as a reasonably grown-up I shouldn’t watch this at all, but hey, sometimes it’s nice to go with the flow and enjoy it without having to think too much. The final scene of season three sets the stage for the new season, I bet I won’t be able to resist it.
