His genius shone particularly brightly in the design of complex, balanced, intricately repetitive floral patterns applicable to textiles and wallpaper—as represented in these notecards.

A progenitor of the movement that came to be called Arts and Crafts, by the 1890s he was a legend throughout the world. William Seltzer Rice (18731963) was born in Pennsylvania but moved to Northern California in 1900, when the regions Arts & Crafts movement was flowering. A talented and prolific watercolorist, Rice taught at various schools in the San Francisco Bay Area, including the California College of Arts & Crafts in Oaklanda center for the movement.
