A wild and crazy rollercoaster of a film that mixes crime, comedy, musical and thriller all in one and does it perfectly! The four main actresses are strengths and directed to perfection by Audiard. Karla plays her pre-transition and post-transition character in a way that comes naturally to her, something she has never done publicly as an actress. This is a powerful performance of our time. I am proud to live in a time where a trans actress plays a trans role. And not only that, she does it. A tragedy to leave a life, but a promise of what she always needs.
And she has a beautiful voice!
Zoe can sing, dance, cry, laugh and everything I think an actor dreams of doing, let alone in a film. I have never seen a film of hers before and I am so glad this was my first because she shines! There is a scene of her in the car where she goes hysterical when she realizes what just happened. Think Margo in I, Tonya or Glenn in Dangerous Liaisons. That scene alone should win her an Oscar. Selena, who I was very excited to see in this movie, throws it away. Playing a mob wife, that cold, stormy woman bubbling beneath the surface that she needs to revisit IMO because as a young girl who endured intense scrutiny and then suffered from psychosis, she knows all too well what… she likes to keep the lid on for far too long. At one point during the screening, when I felt like I was living outside of my body, her character Jessi finally unleashes her emotions on us, the audience, after years of bottling them up.
She is emotional!
There is agony and anger in her voice. It is a testament to why she has said acting is her true calling and how passionate she is about it. It would be foolish to still think that she is a Disney kid and has something to prove. Her acting journey is so interesting because she has been a fan for almost 2 decades. Lastly, Adrian’s character is like a ray of sunshine in the otherwise dark and twisted world that the film lives in. And she complements the work of the other 3 actors perfectly. She brings love and tenderness to the story with her work. It is important to note that this film is like an opera. It reminds me of one of the Umbrellas of Cherbourg, which is also almost entirely sung.
The cinematography was fantastic
Emotionally, it is quite intense, as is, with little moments of calm when you realize you are watching a film. At the end of the film, Selena’s character lies almost unconscious in the passenger seat while her lover drives furiously. The way the camera pans across the car to her face… it looked like a painting, very poetic yet tragic. I am so glad I saw this before it was released on Netflix. It is amazing when a film can make you feel that way.
