A family is invited to spend a weekend in a lonely house in the countryside, but as the weekend goes by they realize there is a dark side to the family who invited them. James McAvoy and Mackenzie Davis share the elements of their characters that they found most intriguing and complement each other as they discuss their different approaches to the craft. The story is inspired by the experiences of Christian Tafdrup, director of the original Danish film Speak No Evil (2022), who befriended a Dutch couple while on holiday in Tuscany with his wife. Although the Dutch were a little socially awkward, the two couples got along very well, and after returning home, Tafdrup received an invitation from the Dutch family to go to Holland. He thought briefly about it, but decided that it would feel weird hanging out with people he didn’t really know; her story for the film came about when she let loose her darkest fantasies about what might have happened if she had agreed (while still claiming that the original Dutch couple never gave off any bad vibes). In the bathroom, while washing her eyes, she has a subconjunctival hemorrhage in her left eye, in the next scene her eyes are perfectly clean.

No pun intended, if you’ve seen the European original (which isn’t even 2 years old), you can understand what I’m trying to convey. To have seen it, it probably makes sense not to have seen it – you might think! However, watching it (and it seems to mostly follow the pattern), this movie seems to be trying to “fix” the situation.
Same goes for James McAvoy
things that some people didn’t like in the original… the son is one of those things… illness can be hard to deal with… your situation makes you lose your passion… or it can make you lose your passion. Not here – and it’s elevating the movie.
he really is the heart of the movie
His acting is subtle and great at the same time. I don’t remember every little thing from the original and I don’t want to offend the original actors… so let’s just say he’s great in this. The acting and overall writing work very well, with a few twists added… even though the adjustments at first might not seem that consequential… but in the end (literally) we get something different…
for different reasons!
for better or worse! I like it: 1) because it’s different from the original and 2) because it’s more suited to the movie and the characters it has to offer! I was skeptical, but this is just as good as the original… Don’t throw stones at me… The final season of “What We Do in the Shadows” is one of the biggest TV and streaming debuts this month.
